The only track on the album with synthetic drums. The most layered track on the album. The song's bass and horns came to Cameron while he was driving home after hours of listening to and preparing a radio spot on Otis Redding. With this in his head, he turned around to go back to the studio. The song's bass and horn parts were written using different synths in the studio as nothing else was set up. Cameron called Andrew and asked him to come to the studio before the ideas and flow stopped. When Andrew got to the studio, Cameron showed him the two distinct parts of the song on bass and asked him to play the chords "very bouncily" on a grand piano in the studio's open space. After playing these two parts together for about 30 minutes to get them tight and let them marinate, Cameron showed Andrew the horn parts, which he had deliberately kept secret so as to keep the piano and bass extremely in sync. After that session, Cameron decided he would only add to the song when he was inspired by listening to other artists. The drums were conceived and added after listening to BADBADNOTGOOD's BBNG2. The strings were added after listening to Kanye West's Late Registration. The guitars were added last and went through at least 10 different iterations. They were written after listening to Lianne La Havas' Blood.
lyrics
I guess I'd never seen that your eyes are so green
Still what they mean to me is everything
Baby, don't you let 'em cry when you leave me
I guess I never got the cable that your eyes were so hazel
Still what they mean to me is everything
Babe, don't let 'em cry when you leave me
Never knew your brown eyes were so dark, almost black just like a shark
Still what they mean to me is everything
Baby, don't you let 'em cry when they leave me
I guess I never knew that your eyes were so blue
Still what they mean to me is everything
Baby, don't you let 'em cry when they leave me
CHORUS:
It was an Eye Opener when I found out I'm not immune to crazy
How could I trick myself, let her body make my mind hazy?
I guess I never knew you got so glad when I confronted you like the dad you never had
Guess I never knew you got so glad
Guess I never knew you got so blue
Just knew you straight up gave up said there's nothing you can do
Guess I never knew you got so blue
Guess I never knew you got so angry
Never knew how quick you could change your tune and decide to hate me
Guess I never knew you got so angry
Some of your problems, they're your own fault
But every mention of working on yourself got me attitude and salt
Some of your problems, they're your own fault
CHORUS
Guess I never thought you'd wanna drop out of school
Get three part time jobs and pave the way for two
What the fuck were you thinking? You were acting like such a fool
Don't tell me that the fucking doctor told you your insides were a coat hanger
I should have done it myself, shoved those pills right down your throat
I was in danger
Thank God I knew to kick you off the raft so I could float
Later
